Youth Umpires
Blue includes special features to support umpires under 18 years old in compliance with Little League guidelines for minor protection.
Overview
Youth umpires (under 18) have additional requirements and protections in the system:
- Parent/guardian contact information must be on file
- Parents are automatically CC’d on all game-related communications
- A blue “Y” badge identifies youth umpires on game listings
These requirements follow Little League’s guidelines for electronic communication with minors, which require that parents or guardians be included in all communications.
Requirements for Youth Umpires
Parent/Guardian Contact
Before you can sign up for or be assigned to games, you must add parent/guardian information to your profile:
Required fields:
- Parent/Guardian Name
- Parent/Guardian Email
- Parent/Guardian Phone
- Relationship (e.g., parent, guardian)
Optional:
- Second parent/guardian contact (both will be CC’d on communications)
How to Add Parent/Guardian Information
- Go to your Profile page
- Click Edit Profile
- Scroll to the Parent/Guardian Contact section
- Fill in the required fields
- Click Save
If you try to sign up for a game without parent/guardian information, you’ll see a message asking you to update your profile first.
Youth Umpire Badge
Umpires under 18 are shown with a blue Y badge next to their name on game listings. This badge:
- Appears in both web and mobile game views
- Helps identify youth umpires for supervision purposes
- Remains visible for the games you were assigned to as a minor, even after you turn 18
The badge ensures that league administrators and fellow umpires can easily identify when a youth umpire is working a game.
Parent/Guardian Communications
When you’re a youth umpire, your parent or guardian is automatically included on all game-related emails:
- Assignment notifications - When you’re assigned to a game
- Game changes - When game time, location, or details change
- Game cancellations - When a game is cancelled
- Removal notifications - If you’re removed from a game
- Messages from administrators - Any direct communication from league staff
This ensures your parent or guardian stays informed about your umpiring activities.
Turning 18
When you turn 18:
- You’re no longer required to have parent/guardian information on file
- New assignments won’t show the youth badge
- Games you were assigned to as a minor will continue to show the youth badge (for historical accuracy)
- Parent/guardian CC emails will no longer be sent for new assignments
The system remembers your minor status at the time of assignment. This ensures accurate records of when supervision requirements applied.
For Parents and Guardians
If your child is registered as an umpire:
- You’ll receive copies of all game-related communications
- Contact your child’s league administrator if you have concerns
- Ensure your contact information is kept up to date in your child’s profile
Privacy
Parent/guardian contact information is:
- Visible to district and league administrators
- Used for automated CC emails on game communications
- Never shown publicly or to other umpires
- Protected with the same security as all user data
